While the others were sitting in the central room, Mulan took the occasion to look about the place. Behind the wooden partition of the central room was a narrow strip of a room barely four or five feet deep, connected with the central room by two side doors, and leading into a quiet, stone-paved courtyard with stone benches, a stone table and a pavement of stone slabs. Pots of flowers and dwarf yews on stone stands, and some porcelain stools, shaped like barrels or drums, were set about. Over the wall Mulan saw a very tall tree a hundred yards away in a neighbor's house. It was a beautiful and quiet corner. From this backyard, Mulan looked in through barred windows to the back room behind Pingya's room. There she saw Mannia wiping her dress and said, "Have you finished?" Mannia looked up and saw Mulan and said "Come in.," so Mulan went through the narrow rear hall and found that this back room was fitted with a small new bed and new furniture as the bride's own bedroom.
