Being able to tell Heron all about his life in the form of a narrative had affected Toad more than he cared to admit. It had been an enormous relief to tell another person about his experiences, without being laughed at or rejected. Here was his life, for better or for worse, in which he was neither a great saint nor a great sinner, just Toad. What pleased him most was the way Heron seemed to be genuinely interested in all of it.
