After Mannia entered the Tseng family Mulan's visits became much more frequent so that she ceased altogether to be considered a guest in the house. She often stayed for dinner and sometimes for the night, with her mother's permission. There had been as yet no formal talk on the part of the parents about her engagement to either of the Tseng boys because their parents still wished to see her often, which could not be if she were definitely engaged, and she was yet young. But they tacitly assumed that her parents would not engage her to any other young man without speaking to them first. So if Mannia already had both her feet inside the Tseng threshold, Mulan might be considered to have one foot in. The Tsengs could always catch her hind foot if she tried to run away.
